About Five Star

Let's start with the basics. Five Star has been around since 1964. Five Star is a not-for-profit financial cooperative run by its members, not a bank. That's an important difference. Banks are in the profit-making business. We also have an educational focus that shows up in everything from in-school courses to a quarterly newsletter. A credit union is a not-for-profit, member-owned, financial cooperative that serves its members' needs. The earnings of credit unions are returned to its members in the form of lower loan rates and fewer fees. Credit unions do not have shareholders that are looking for a profit every year. Credit unions are formed from the seven cooperative principles that many cooperative still use today.

Five Star’s history grew from the trees of Alabama and Georgia. We were founded in 1964 in Cedar Springs, GA, as the Cedar Springs Federal Credit Union and chartered to serve employees of the Great Southern Paper Company. Today Five Star serves 42 counties in Alabama and Georgia.

Our 28 financial centers serve 42 counties in Alabama and Georgia.
